What the hell is a Joolz?
An Introduction to the delicate, ladylike angel that is Jules Rivera
Haha, fooled you. I’m neither delicate nor ladylike. I’m setting up this Substack alongside my Patreon as a hub for everything Jules Rivera.
Oh, wait, but you don’t know who I am yet.
My name is Jules Rivera. I’m a comics illustrator, writer, and designer. My day job is being the writer and artist for Mark Trail, a 75-year-running cartoon strip about the adventures of Mark Trail as he tackles nature issues, climate change, and educates the world on animals.
Look at my handsome cartoon son!
But when I’m not doing Mark Trail, I make my own comics under my webcomic, Love, Joolz. It’s a slice of life comic that’s basically the contents of my dumb brain. Here’s a sample strip for ya.
You know what? Have another.
I forgot to mention I’m obsessed with surfing. Yes, I’m obsessed with surfing. We will have a lot of posts here about surfing. If you like surfing, great news! We’re gonna talk about surfing.
I also drew these science fiction graphic novels because why not?
200 is the story of a woman facing a government organized test that may result in her death, and her screaming rebellion against all that. This is my best graphic novel and I have the most AMAZING personal story behind this book both going into the inspiration and a year and a half after its release.
Why yes that personal story is about my ex-husband flipping out at his wedding to a new person and calling me about it.
I can’t make that shit up.
Spectre Deep 6 is about a team of soldiers who have died in the line of duty and are brought back as action hero ghosts! Sadly, I don’t push Spectre all that much these days. It’s not that I don’t love Spectre Deep 6. It’s just this book doesn’t come with the fun personal stories that 200 does. I mean…I would love for some bonkers personal story to tie to this but I don’t have one.
Wait, that’s not true. I should write about the story sequence inspired by my explosive orgasm migraines.
Yep.
So, I guess Joolzlandia is a place of intensity, futurism, and my sharp, sharp sense of humor.
I mean Love, Joolz literally has knives in the logo. It’s bound to get pointy around here.
Love ya.
